Even with strong solar activity, cloud cover or moonlight can make aurora difficult to see. AuroraVision combines solar wind data, geomagnetic storms and local weather conditions to estimate your actual visibility.
From the Sun to the sky — the full process
1. Solar Wind — Charged particles stream from the Sun at 400–800 km/s, carrying the interplanetary magnetic field toward Earth.
2. Magnetosphere — When Bz points southward, Earth's magnetic field opens and funnels solar particles down toward the polar auroral zones.
3. Atmospheric Collision — Solar particles slam into oxygen and nitrogen molecules at 100–300 km altitude, exciting atoms to higher energy states.
4. Light Emission — Excited atoms release energy as visible light. Oxygen at 100 km glows green, at 200 km red; nitrogen produces blue and purple hues.
