Five data points that determine aurora visibility in Finland
Southward Bz is the primary trigger. Finnish Lapland at 66–69°N is inside the auroral oval during strong activity.
High speed (>500 km/s) drives aurora deeper into the oval. Finland's latitude benefits from moderate to strong solar wind.
Total interplanetary magnetic field. Strong Bt combined with southward Bz produces the best Finnish aurora.
Solar wind proton density. Higher density amplifies aurora intensity across all Finnish Lapland locations.
Finnish Lapland winters are often clear and cold. The eastern fells near Russia tend to have drier, clearer conditions.
Best viewing window is 21:00–02:00 local time (UTC+2 in winter). Finnish Lapland has polar night in December and January — prime time for all-night aurora hunting. Kaamos (polar night) means complete darkness and the best aurora windows of the year.
