AuroraVision is a free northern lights forecast tool designed for aurora hunters in Iceland and across the northern hemisphere. We combine live solar wind data (Bz, speed, density), the Planetary K-index, cloud cover forecasts, and OVATION aurora power output into a single visibility score β updated every 2 minutes.
We believe aurora forecasting should be simple, honest, and free. No paywalls, no misleading "100% chance tonight" clickbait β just real data, explained clearly.
The visibility score combines 5 factors: solar wind Bz (45%), solar wind speed (25%), total IMF strength (15%), particle density (5%), and cloud cover (10%). This is a data-driven weighted formula β no guesswork, no so-called "AI".
Forecast data updates every 2 minutes from NOAA's DSCOVR/ACE satellite and SWPC in real time. Cloud cover comes from Open-Meteo, calculated per your GPS location.
Aurora forecasts are inherently uncertain. Solar wind conditions can change within minutes. Our score is based on current measurements, not predictions hours ahead. Cloud cover can shift rapidly and locally. Visibility is never guaranteed β this is a natural phenomenon, not an engineering certainty.
The AuroraVision app for iOS and Android sends push notifications when the aurora visibility score crosses your chosen threshold β so you don't have to keep checking.
Questions, feedback, partnership enquiries, or press requests β we'd love to hear from you.
