Reykjavik is a great base for northern lights hunting, though the city itself has significant light pollution. The aurora needs to be reasonably strong (KP 3+) to be visible from the city centre. A short 20–30 minute drive to dark areas dramatically improves your chances of seeing even a faint display.
Popular aurora viewing spots near Reykjavik include the Reykjanes Peninsula (30 min drive), Þingvellir National Park (45 min), and Mosfellsdalur valley (20 min). All offer dark skies within easy reach of the city — and most aurora tours depart from central Reykjavik and drive you to these locations.
All within 45 minutes of the city centre
Volcanic lava fields, sea cliffs, and minimal light pollution. The Reykjanes UNESCO geopark provides vast dark sky areas directly south of the capital.
UNESCO World Heritage Site in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Excellent dark skies, a river valley for reflection photography, and wide open horizons.
The closest dark option. The surrounding hills naturally block Reykjavik's glow. A short drive up the valley is enough to dramatically reduce light pollution and reveal fainter aurora.
A remote volcanic lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The still water creates mirror reflections of aurora. A favourite among photographers and a reliable dark-sky destination year-round.
KP requirements for different viewing locations around Reykjavik
Faint arc or glow on the horizon. Only visible from very dark rural areas, not from Reykjavik or suburbs. Naked eye difficult — camera may pick it up.
Clear aurora visible from Reykjavik suburbs. Excellent from dark spots near the city (Mosfellsdalur, Kleifarvatn). Rays, curtains, and colour become visible to the naked eye.
Geomagnetic storm. Visible from Reykjavik city centre despite light pollution. Active dancing display with strong green colour and possible pink/red fringes.
Tip: Even if KP is low, always check our live visibility score — it factors in cloud cover and solar wind orientation, not just KP. A KP 2 with southward Bz and clear skies can produce visible aurora from Reykjavik dark spots.
